What knowledge have you connected with past knowledge?

My favorite part of biochemistry, besides learning all the new and exciting information from lecture, is the biochemistry connection presentations. For example, I presented why we need to eat more salmon and found out what omega-3 really does and how it can help prevent heart disease and such.

I'm concurrently taking genetics with biochemistry so it's interesting that as we move further along in the processes of replication, transcription, and translation, I get a more broad explanation in genetics and then actually discover the biochemical processes that go on in more detailed perspective in biochemistry. Some of which include names of specific enzymes and what they do.

Also, this class has allowed me to make farther connections and clarified previous random biological facts that I've learned over the past couple of years that made no sense at the time.

  1. I agree that biochemistry connected alot of my past knowledge to new knowledge as well. DNA replication, structure of proteins, and more. Understanding the structure of the DNA in a molecular level helped understand transcription and translation in a whole different level. Not only as processes but why do those processes happen and how they happen as well.

  2. It's always helpful when relating new knowledge to past knowledge because it will be easier to remember. The information will then be retrieved easier since more neural connections will be made to that new material.

  3. I agree that there is alot of my past knowlege that is connected to the knew knowledge. We have talked alot about replication, transcription, and translation in previous courses (as Zahra said) but biochemistry goes more into depth about the biochemical processes. The previous knowledge I had was just a general overview, but biochemistry has made it more detailed and clear for me to understand these processes.

  4. I also agree that there is alot of past knowledge from most of my sciece courses i have taken here at UNHM.The most connections is with genetics except much more in depth.

  5. :) Thanks for commenting! Glad to see so many people agree.

  6. It's wonderful to see all of these connections to our previous science courses and I'm sure we will see them all again in future course work as well. It must be especially beneficial for you to be taking these courses together allowing for more connections between topics!
